That’s right, we reprinted issue 3 again. That’s the issue that tells about how she ramped up the homophobia in Minnesota in order to get the GOP nomination to run for Congress. So that’s available to order, now.

The other news is that Issue 2 (“Right Wing Nuts Rule”) is now sold out. Well–technically it’s sold out, you can still get copies from Minnesota retailers like Big Brain Comics, Common Good Books, and the Source Comics and Games. And I still have a few copies of my own that I will keep, but I don’t have enough to fulfill online orders anymore.

Fear not, I will reprint Issue 2 this summer. (It’s the issue about how she got into the US Congress, despite her already-existing track record of nutty conspiracy theories.)

Anyway… all of this becomes even more important than it was before. Because the mainstream press reactions to the GOP debate in New Hampshire lend her serious credibility as a White House contender. The reaction to her performance at the debate were uniformly positive in “the big press.” The big papers and broadcast outlets are sweeping all the “nut, bigot, and liar” stuff under the rug, for the moment.

As I’ve written many times before on the Kos and other blogs: my personal opinion is that Bachmann is not “top of the ticket.” I’ve always thought of her more as “the eventual GOP vice-presidential nominee”–because she solves a lot of problems for Mitt Romney, if he ends up at the top of the ticket.

But I’ve been wrong before… For example, I thought that Bachmann had to actually *lead* something (as a senator, a governor, something like that) before the world press and the GOP would take her seriously as a White House contender. I was wrong about that, for sure: she’s running very well at the moment. Despite the fact that she’s never put together any serious legislation, never enacted any conservative reforms, never done anything, really–except demagogue.

As explained in the comics, it’s the forces behind Bachmann that make her politically formidable. But all the “nut, bigot and liar stuff” is in there, too.

And this week, I’m publishing an e-book called “Michele Bachmann’s America” with my co-author Minnesota journalist Chris Truscott. (This is a “book” book, not a comic book–we’ve spent months writing it, collecting the source materials, the original Bachmann quotes.) “Michele Bachmann’s America” has got a lot of stuff on Bachmann’s career that’s never been published before, as well as the ten years worth of “nut, liar and bigot” stuff that the big media are currently burying. “Michele Bachmann’s America” will be available for sale by Wednesday, God willing.

The “gay” issue (Issue Three) keeps selling out. I don’t know why; I guess it’s because it has the “funniest” cover. Or maybe gay people like it; I don’t know. I’ve already ordered another reprint of the Gay Issue to make it available again–I’ll let you guys know when it goes on sale again.

Anyway…that’s very shallow of you, if you guys are only buying this comic when it has a funny cover. There is a lot of good solid content in all of these… the wacky Bachmann statements, the lies, the paranoid politics of evangelical conservatives, me bitching at the readers… you don’t want to miss that.

And then there’s the “art,” that’s included in every single issue–you don’t want to pass up a chance to look at some “art”–do you?

Issues One (“The Beginning!”), Two (“Right Wing Nuts Rule!”), and Four (“Michele and GOD!”) are all available for sale, right now. They make great gifts for liberals, good gifts for low-information voters, and excellent passive-aggressive gifts for conservatives. Order at the top left of this page.

Another good column from Guardian pundit Michael Tomasky. He’s inclined to see Republicans gaining control of the House this fall. And he spells out the reason why:

But the bottom line is this: the Democrats are afraid of the Republicans. They – all of them, from Obama on down – are afraid of Rush Limbaugh and Michele Bachmann and you name it. You hear Democratic operatives talk strategy, and there’s always a “logical” reason why this or that aggressive attack might not work. But it’s nothing to do with logic. They’re just afraid. Bachmann, the Minnesota congresswoman who wants the government out of everything, is a good case in point. It’s been revealed that her family farm has received $250,000 in federal subsidies. If she were a Democrat, the Republicans would make sure the entire country knew it.

But the Democrats won’t do things like that. If they had for the past 20 months, Americans would be talking about a president who, all things considered, is doing his best against quasi-insane and hypocritical opposition. But they’re telling each other a different story. And the Democrats will go on not learning the lesson of the price of their fear.

I think he’s right, the Dem management does fear the GOP. But this is just a single opinion column–in that kind of space you just can’t cover all the reasons why the Dems plays defense instead of offense.

First: there’s the mismatch in getting the message out. I mean, the Dems have money. The trad media reports Dem advantages in fund raising this year wherever these exist–but trad media focus on that distorts the elections picture. Because it ignores a key conservative strength throughout the last thirty years of election cycles: conservatives have their own national and local broadcasting media. That represents hour after hour of conservative propaganda going out all the time, all over the country. (Anecdote: just today, Sunday, I was punching the radio buttons and got a Rush Limbaugh tirade rebroadcast, the local clone on another station, and an evangelical speaker arguing that Americans had a duty imposed by God to support the government of Israel. All of that; in the space of five minutes in the Minnesota radio market.)

Dems and liberals and progressives have nothing comparable to that; nothing at all–Maddow, Olbermann and Schultz and their ilk are a niche market by comparison…they reach a fraction of the voters that their conservative opponents reach, and their conservative opponents outnumber them by the hundreds.

There’s the “secular” conservative broadcasting (Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, Savage and the hundreds of local knock-offs that follow them in local time slots)…but you must add to that the evangelical conservative broadcasting, which also broadcasts the conservative propaganda. And adds to it the authority of Christ.

How much do you think it would cost the Dems to match that machine, to get their message out to compete with that of the conservatives? If you think about that, you’ll probably realize that the money contributed to Dems–critical to keeping the conservatives out of power–is actually dwarfed by the media power that conservative *don’t need to buy.*

So there’s another reason why the Dems don’t go on offense. Still another is the one that Tomasky highlights in his column: the unemployment rate is too high. Nothing to misunderstand there–you don’t fix that economy and keep the American middle class feeing good about it…and you can expect to lose elections, lose the advantage. It’s kind of funny to hear people on progressive blogs arguing about the administration’s failure on this or that important issue (environment, identity politics, whatever)–because they don’t seem to realize that whole game slips out of our control if the people who vote don’t feel good about their financial prospects.

I mean: you can’t say you weren’t warned about that, right? It wasn’t the endless wars or the endless lying or their role in the Katrina disaster that did in the Bush admin and the GOP Congress and led Obama and the Dems into power. All of those Bush disasters hurt, badly–but it was the Wall Street meltdown and another reach around recession (that would have become a world wide depression) that crushed conservatism.

Temporarily. They were down as low as twenty four per cent but the conservative media advantage I mentioned above will keep them in play as long as it exists. (Just because you don’t listen to that crap they broadcast, doesn’t mean that millions of Americans are rabid fans.)

That conservative media advantage, plus Dem fail to produce a strong economy prior to the elections–is gonna hurt. It will hurt very bad, because the GOP that is now positioned to take over is well and truly nutty (remember who I write about regularly, and her current status in the party and the conservative movement nationally.)

So that’s why Dems are on defense…to go on the attack (in terms of getting your message to the public and discrediting the opposition)–you have to have the means to go on attack. The conservatives have those means, every day; the Dems…lack the means.

I guess they could craft a more aggressive *message* and use their existing means to get that out…They might try terrifying the voters with the prospect of a Bachmann type GOP in power, visions of that kind of government overseeing the mass impoverishment of American working families, more wars, extremist reforms.

It’s very hard to get them to do that; to get Dems to carry the fight to enemy. I spent years bitching at local Dems and media to (correctly) characterize Bachmann as an extremist. They didn’t want to do that; they wanted to run on “the economic issues.” What will incumbent Dems run on now, with the perception of the economy being what it is?

It would be the good fight to point up that the other side are liars and crackpots who ran the country into the ground the last time it was handed to them. And it would be true; that message would be true–there’s a lot of material there. And they may as well try it–because when the voters are being told how bad the economy sucks, every day and all the time: keeping your head down, bending over and hoping for the best is not a good strategy…

Tomasky’s column:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/cifamerica/2010/aug/22/us-democrats-fright-club

ACTION LINK:
Tarryl Clark, Bachmann’s opponent, needs your help. If Bachmann wins again and the GOP does take over the House: Bachmann will be making policy for *you,* my friend.

“Here’s the kind of discourse that Republicans in (Minnesota’s State Senate) District 56 are interested in: The party website is now running a video about how “hot” Republican women are compared to “Democrat [sic] women.” To the strains of Tom Jones’ “She’s a Lady,” the video runs through a series of photos of GOP women in bikinis, evening gowns and, in Sarah Palin’s case, Spandex. Then the Dems: women like Rosie O’Donnell, Janet Reno (pictured), Nancy Pelosi and Madeleine Albright — set to the song, “Who Let The Dogs Out?”

Yes, Michele Bachmann’s in there with the Republican women. The story appeared in the Minnesota Independent this morning. An update to the story appeared later and said the video had been pulled, but I just played the video now, at one in the morning, on the Minnesota Independent’s website…
http://minnesotaindependent.com/63666/minn-gop-on-dem-women-who-let-the-dogs-out

In the meantime, the Independent’s Paul Schmelzer called local GOP candidates for comment…one of them, Kathy Lohmer, is running for state senate in my district.
“I just heard about this within the last 1/2 hour — and immediately called for the resignation of our web site manager for the BPOU [Basic Party Operating Unit],” (candidate Lohmer) wrote in an email. Lohmer, who is running against DFL Rep. Julie Bunn and independent Jim Martin in 56A, acknowledges she hasn’t — and likely won’t — watch the video. But she says she took swift action.

“I also asked my website manager to take the SD56 webpage link OFF of my site,” she continued. “I don’t want to be connected in any way to that type of behavior. I detest the dirty campaigning, the sign stealing, etc. All of these tactics do nothing to show the clear differences between my opponent and myself. My campaign is about integrity, common sense, fiscal responsibility, personal responsibility, respect for life and respect for the Constitution.”
http://minnesotaindependent.com/63750/gops-lohmer-calls-for-resignation-of-sd56-webmaster-over-video

But before you start complimenting Lohmer for her admirable response: you should know that she’s the local “Bachmann imitator” candidate in this race. Worked for Bachmann on previous campaigns, tea party candidate, the whole works.

I know
that you know
the parallel universe exists.

Sorry to go all William Carlos Williams on you there for a second. But I want to make it clear that “I know, you already know” that a parallel universe of disinformation and false historical premises and twilight realities has already been constructed for Americans who call themselves “conservatives.”

But what I want to know is: are you looking inside that parallel universe? Regularly? You should be, because about twenty-five to twenty-seven per cent of American voters choose to live there.

I know you know about Glenn Beck, and I know you know about Michele Bachmann. But are you aware of the extent of the vast support network that exists, beyond those high-profile demagogues?

I am, because I listen to evangelical conservative radio broadcasting, where talk of an end-times apocalypse is regularly figures in the political analysis of evangelical current affairs programming. But I suspect that too many of you simply screen this out of your lives because it’s wild-eyed garbage (if garbage can be said to have “wild eyes.”)

That’s a mistake, if you do that–turn this stuff off. Because if you listen to it or read it: you will understand how paranoid nuts can get into Congress; how George W. Bush can be re-elected in 2006 by 3 million votes.

Here is another glimpse into that perverse world, where the assumptions on the legitimacy of elected government are those of right wing militia groups…

The author is political commentator Robert Ringer, the publication is WorldNetDaily (conservative evangelical news organ, big Bachmann fans…)

Ringer excoriates the Republican Party for living in fear of being labeled “extremist.” His opinion of the Constitution and constitutional law tracks Bachmann’s: that government has no right “to engage in activities that are not spelled out in the Constitution.”

The recent Senate debate over yet another extension of unemployment benefits was a perfect example of the RINO problem. Most Republicans were careful to say they supported the extension of jobless pay, but argued that the costs should be “paid for” rather than added to the federal deficit.Attention Republican senators: There is no provision in the Constitution for the government to provide unemployment benefits – period! Yet, this obvious fact was never part of the debate. And so it is with virtually every congressional debate. Such time-wasting debates are almost always based on a false premise – usually that the government has a right to engage in activities that are not spelled out in the Constitution.

The fact that this “legal theory” flies in the face of two hundred years of established American constitutional law does not slow him down for a second. You have to trust him on this one, not all those generations of federal judges and elected legislators.

Then Ringer gets down to the real question:

So, the big question remains: If we actually have elections in November (Editor sez: Jesus! See footnote.), and if Republicans can overcome Democratic fraud and voter intimidation and win both the House and Senate, will enough of them have the courage to stand up and talk tea-party language? If they are fearful, all they need to do is follow closely behind Superwoman (a.k.a. Michele Bachmann), Jim DeMint, Ron Paul and a host of other tea-party House and Senate members. Bachmann is a woman who never ceases to amaze me with her ability and courage to zero in on the real issues. She doesn’t buy into false-premise debates, which drives the far Left crazy. In a recent interview, she said:

“I think that all we should do is issue subpoenas and have one hearing after another, and expose all the nonsense that has gone on.” The only word I would take issue with is “nonsense.” I would be inclined to call it blatant criminal activity. But I agree with her that a tidal wave of subpoenas should be issued.

Footnote: Notice that the author is actually alerting his readers to the possibility that elections may not be held at all this fall–that the mythical criminal socialist conspiracy may crush the elections under its iron heel as early as this summer! This is the parallel universe, the dark backward that millions of Americans have been taught to live in. It’s not just the militia guys anymore: it’s the conservative evangelical political movement (representing tens of millions of votes) that has been taught to think this way.

It’s here; there’s a sizeable minority of millions of Americans who are nuts. They are being deliberately trained to stay nuts, to reject post-Enlightenment standards for knowledge and information–and they vote.

For me, that’s the American political problem of our time. I think that if you solve that problem, we can go forward. But I admit I’m prejudiced about identifying the American political problem of our time.

Well–according to Bachmann’s Dem opponent Tarryl Clark–this is a real possibility. From Ben Smith at Politico, the text of a fund raising email:

Bachmann said she would run for president if she felt called to it, and said in another interview that it’s not what she’s doing “right now” – leaving the door wide open. She remarked recently to FOX News that her supporters want her to run for president. And Bachmann’s multiple trips to Iowa prompted Politico to report:”Bachmann has been receiving a little attention in conservative circles as a potential presidential candidate in 2012. And like so many other Republicans seeking a national profile, an early trip to Iowa, with its first-in-the-nation caucus, provides an opportunity to test-drive her presidential appeal.”

There’s no doubt that Bachmann has been working diligently to raise her national profile, recently appointing herself the head of the Tea Party in Congress and forming a national fundraising PAC to help right-wing candidates around the country. And in the past few weeks alone, Bachmann has popped up in Michigan, Missouri, New York, and Nevada.

According to Politico, that’s from Bachmann opponent Tarryl Clark’s fund raising email.

According to me, Clark’s right. There’s no reason to doubt that Bachmann’s aiming for the White House–at the top or the bottom of a future GOP ticket. That’s what all the “out of state campaigning” represents. I’ve been writing about this for years now. Her base is national; not limited to Minnesota or the Sixth Congressional District of Minnesota.

It makes perfect sense if you understand that Bachmann’s been groomed for this career path by the leadership of the national evangelical right. She is in their stable of candidates and politicians; a particularly successful protege. She’s certainly not theonly evangelical machine protege aimed at the White House–but she’s one of ‘em.

As a member of a White House ticket she will keep the right on board: the media conservatives, their vast audiences, and millions of conservative evangelical voters. And so far she’s been quite successful in co-opting the support of the new “tea party” brand. (Though she’s run into trouble this year by endorsing establishment GOP over tea party candidates, at this writing she and Sarah Palin are still the teabagger favorites.)

Her presence on a White House ticket would assure the candidates of endless hours of enthusiastic free promotion over the airwaves on evangelical Christian broadcast stations around the country–coupled with endless hours of attacks on the godlessness of any opponents. That translates into a big election advantage, a big GOTV advantage.

The stumbling block (for me, anyway) was always this: to get to a White House ticket, tradition tells us that a candidate has to have some kind of real leadership experience. Not just election victories or status within a party, but some real experience demonstrating successful leadership in government. In the past, holding a senate seat or governorship or an important command in the armed forces have been the stepping stones to the White House ticket.

Bachmann doesn’t have anything like that in her resume so far. Despite the fact that she’s been in elected office for ten years, she has no noteworthy legislative achievements to her name.

But is she is nationally popular with conservatives and the conservative media. There’s no doubt that (despite her lack of achievement) she’s a hero to the American right. Earlier this year, I went out on a limb and speculated that this might be her moment–that the next move in her career would be to go for the governor’s mansion or a Senate seat here in Minnesota.

But she didn’t enter the governor’s race here in Minnesota (instead a Bachmann fan named Tom Emmer clubbed aside his GOP opposition to get the nomination; too bad for the Bachmann right in this state because polls show any of the leading Dem candidates beating him in November.)

The next time she could mount a Senate challenge would be against Minnesota’s Senator Amy Klobuchar; that’s years away.

So what’s the deal with all the “out of state, out of district” campaigning: the non-stop appearances on conservative broadcasting, in evangelical media, the national tours to speak before conservative interest groups and audiences around the country? Why the focus on the creation of a national profile for this particular right winger, if the goal isn’t the White House?

Bachmann has broken the “rules” of conventional political wisdom before; she’s famous for breaking them. (For example, the rule about how “macaca media moments” can ruin the career of a conservative politician–Bachmann’s had many, many moments like that; they simply roll off her back.)

It may be that Bachmann and her mentors have decided that rule about demonstrating the capacity for leadership prior to a White House run simply doesn’t apply to her particular career. They may believe that she can go straight on to a White House ticket–without having demonstrated the capacity to lead and govern–simply because she can bring the right, the extreme right, and millions of conservative evangelical voters with her.

Next:
As of July 21st: fifty-one members of Congress had joined Bachmann’s Tea Party Caucus. (That’s that national leadership thing; a way you get to be recognized as a leader without ever having run anything.)
There’s this guy in a t-shirt out in a shed in Michigan, he’s doing a You Tube broadcast, and he is mad at EVERYBODY (except Ron Paul.) There’s video below. But he posted an email he got from Focus on the Family, I’m reprinting it here…

Got an email from Family Research Council …
READS: “Please forward this to a friend”…so I’ll post it to my friends here …Dear John,

On September 17-19 in Washington, DC, FRC Action will join with The Heritage Foundation, AFA Action, American Values, Liberty University/Liberty Counsel and Family Research Council, to bring you the 2010 Values Voter Summit. Registration is just $99 for this three-day event which Dr. Bill Bennett has called “the most exciting meeting there is in Washington.”

Confirmed speakers include Representatives Michele Bachmann and Mike Pence; Governors Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney; Dr. Bill Bennett; Senator Rick Santorum; The Duggar Family; a Hollywood panel with Dr. Ted Baehr, Nancy Stafford (“Matlock”, “Quantum Leap”) and Robert Davi (“Die Hard”); a Tea Party panel featuring Amy Kremer, Chairman of Tea Party Express, Katy Abram, who started a firestorm when she confronted Senator Arlen Specter at a Town Hall meeting and Billie Tucker, Organizer of the First Coast Tea Party; Star Parker; Phyllis Schlafly; Lila Rose; Herman Cain and many more.

If we will join together, pray for our nation and take an unyielding stand for faith, family and freedom, we will succeed in stopping an out of control president and Congress and redirect America’s future.

Standing (Ephesians 6:13),

Now here is the guy’s video. It’s him in his shed, doing his show. Is that “Foreigner” in the opening montage, or “Styx?” His use of jump cuts is extraordinary, but he says he’s in need of job. The YouTube video is eleven minutes long; I suggest you skip through his reading of the excerpt from Proverbs and hear what he has to say about “what it all means.” I cannot understand why this man has been marginalized by the American right.
